JOB TITLE: YOUTH MINISTRY DIRECTOR
First Presbyterian Church, Tacoma, is an intergenerational evangelical church located in the historic Stadium District of Tacoma, WA. Each week, we offer opportunities for worship (Sundays @ 10:30 am), Bible study, and fellowship. We also operate a Christian school as well as Camp McCullough, a Christian conference center and campground.
The Youth Ministry Director leads and directs the church’s youth program for 6th through 12 grade (middle and high school). The Director works with the Senior Pastor and Youth Committee to plan for the educational and spiritual needs of the youth and is the face of the Youth Program to the congregation.
This is a full time position that involves 40 hours per week and can involve both early mornings and late nights- sometimes on the same day! The ministry also involves some weekends, such as retreats, mission trips and summer camps. The Youth Ministries Director is expected to adjust his/her hours in accordance with staff meetings, committee meetings, church services, etc., in order to strike the appropriate work/family/ministry life balance.
This position reports to and is supervised by the Senior Pastor and the Youth Committee.
STATUS: Full-time, Salaried
Minimum Salary: $32,000 includes a competitive compensation package based on education and experience.
Drafting and executing plan for achieving goals of FPC Youth Min. in consultation with Youth Committee.
Maintaining regular communication with youth, parents, and the FPC community -responsible for communicating youth activities through traditional and modern methods – print newsletter/bulletin announcements as well as updates via email and social media.
Recruiting, training, and supporting a team of Youth Leaders to help with the mission and ministry of FPC Youth Group.
Providing ways for youth visiting FPC to connect with the Youth Ministry and for participants in the Youth Ministry to get involved in the wider FPC community – specifically seek out ways for youth to be involved in leading Sunday morning worship.
Develop and model discipling relationships with church youth.
Create and staff a discipling and spiritual development program, elements of which may include youth Sunday school, mid-week Bible studies, bells, etc.
Lead planning and recruitment for the Middle School Camp and High School Camp weeks at Camp McCullough; assist in promoting Camp McCullough among church and school families.
Contact and minister to FPC youth and their parents in times of crisis, and follow up with absent youth.
Build relationship with FPC School, especially with the fifth grade teachers, students and families.
Lead planning and organizing of special youth events. Past examples are: spring break high school mission trip, fundraisers for mission trips, monthly fun events, Gleanings for the Hungry trip, and retreats.
Have a regular presence in Sunday worship at FPC; can include helping in worship.
Stay current on personal discipleship and professional development.
Experience (paid or unpaid) in Youth Ministry or ministry-related or youth-related field, such as education, Christian education, Christian counseling, or athletics.
College Degree preferred.
Approved Washington State background check.
Evidence of steady church involvement and biblical knowledge.
Personal relationship with Jesus and required to become a member of FPC.
Agreement with ECO Presbyterian Essential Tenants and the Confessing Church statements.
Faith in Jesus Christ that is lived out daily.
Evidence of personal and spiritual maturity.
Cross-generational effectiveness in verbal and written communication.
Leadership skills and teaching ability.
Love for youth and their families.
Ability to accept and learn from constructive criticism.
Good stewardship of money and resources.
Flexibility and team spirit.
Ability to discern the needs and priorities of the position while working with minimal supervision.
The position reports to the Senior Pastor and serves as a member of the Youth Committee. The Director is expected to cultivate positive relations with all church staff; especially the Director of Children’s Ministries and the Camp Director.
